Treaties
This section provides a list and description of resources, lessons and other material which will assist in the teaching of the Treaties in Canada. The purpose of this section is to provide information for the students about how the treaties were created, implemented and what the purpose of them was. From these resources, the students will gain a clear understanding of how First Nations cultures were impacted by the creation of the treaties and how it is important to understand why these are still important legal documents in today’s world.

Activites:
To help students understand some of the reasons behind why treaties were created, this word search has some key words which were involved in the making of the treaties.
The following word searches are based around the First Nation groups that signed treaties in Saskatchewan. Each word search provides a list of the First Nation Clan name. Lesson Plans:
A pre made lesson plan aimed at grade 3, this lesson is made for students to work together to gain a better understanding of how treaties worked and how they were made to be a peaceful methods. Click here for the lesson plan.
A pre made lesson plan aimed at grades 7-8, helps to students gain a better understanding of what the treaties were about and why many of the First Nation clans signed them. This map shows the different treaties and the years that they came into effect across Canada.
Articles and Videos:
The Canadian Encyclopaedia provides a history of the treaties that were created in Canada and the purposes of them. Also it provides a time line of the important events that were going on when the signing of the treaties was occurring.
Library and Archives Canada has a list of some of the most important treaties that were created, along with images of the treaties that were signed by the Europeans and the different First Nation clans. This material can be incorporated into class discussions and research activities about the uses of each treaty.
This section of CBC, provides news radio broadcasts that have been previously taped and news segments about the issues going on between First Nations groups and the government. These can be used to start class discussions are accompany lessons based on the issues going on and what resolutions could be done.
