Chapter 4 -- Numbers and Operations
|
Your paired mathematics lesson plan is due today. It is worth 10% of your course mark. Read chapter 4 of your text. Bring to class one children's book that relates to numbers and operations and that addresses mathematics at an Early Childhood level. Be prepared to read your story to others and also be prepared to demonstrate and discuss the mathematics of your story and how you would use this story to engage young children in learning mathematics. Exit question |

Chapter 5 -- Patterns, Functions and Algebra
Information about your resource kit |
Read chapter 5 of your text. Bring to class one children's book that relates to patterns, functions, and algebra and that addresses mathematics at an Early Childhood level. Be prepared to discuss aspects of your story with others and also be prepared to demonstrate and share the mathematics of your story and how you would use this story to engage young children in learning mathematics. Why is an understanding of pattern so important in knowing mathematics? Exit question |
| October 23 | "Playing with Math" preparation | |
| October 24 | From 10:00-11:45 EMTH 215-040 and Vi are presenting at an RBE workshop called "Playing with Math." This is a Pre-kindergarten workshop, with about 70 participants. This workshop will occur in the Ron Mitchell Room at the Board offices -- 1600 4th Ave. Regina. Phone # is 791-8200. Everyone is welcome to come any time after 9 a.m. There will a short registration from 9:00-9:30 and then some business from 9:30-10:00. From 10:00-10:20 Vi will talk about pre-number concepts. Problem Solving
|
Read chapter 3 of your text Bring to class one children's book that relates to problem solving and to geometry and that addresses mathematics at an Early Childhood level. Be prepared to discuss aspects of your story with others and also be prepared to demonstrate and share the mathematics of your story and how you would use this story to engage young children in learning mathematics. What does it mean to have a problem-solving focus or a problem-solving orientation to teaching? Exit question Read chapter 6 of your text. What is 'spatial sense?' |
| November 6 | Lori Jane Dowell-Hantelmann, the Regina Public School Board Mathematics consultant, will be here today to talk to you about problem solving, about assessing problem solving, about the value of writing in mathematics, and about rubrics for assessment. She will have class sets of problems for you to score. | There may be assigned reading from the guest that you should read for today. You will be given any assigned readings prior to October 23. |
