Constitution
of the SSMSTS

1. Name: The name of the association shall be the Saskatchewan Science and Mathematics Student Teacher's Soceity. (SSMSTS)
 

2. Affilliation : The SSMSTS shall be affiliated with the Saskatchewan Mathematics Teachers' Society (SMTS), and the Saskatchewan Science Teachers' Society (SSTS), henceforth referred to as the parent societies.
 

3. Purpose and Objective:

3.1 The purpose of the SSMSTS is to foster excellence in mathematics and science education in elementary , middle, and secondary schools.

3.2 The objectives of the SSMSTS shall be:

i) To improve the quality of instruction and learning and the level of teacher competence

ii) To improve practice in the teaching of science and mathematics by increading members' knowledge and understanding of science and math.

iii) To act as a clearing house for ideas and a source of information of trends and new ideas.

4. Membership:

4.1 Regular - Any student with a professional interest in mathematics and science shall be eligible for membership. Only members in good standing shall be eligible for office or for the right to vote at any of the general meetings of the society.

4.11 Fees - All dues are payable upon joining the society and are non-refundable. They are based on a two-year period and are presently fiften dollars, with ten of which goes directly to the parent societies

4.2 Honorary - An honorary membership may be awarded to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to education, science, mathematics, citizenship, or humanity. If awarded, an honorary membership shall be presented at a general meeting of the SSMSTS.

5. Finance:

5.1 The memberhsip period and fees for all categories of membership are recommended by the parent socieities and approved by the executive.

5.2 The fiscal year of the society shall extend from September 1 to May 1 of the consecutive year.

6. Officers:

6.1 The executive of the society shall consist of : President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, Director(s) of Public Relations, Immediate Past-President, and two Members at Large. Whenever possible, and highly encouraged, representatives from each of the five sections within the faculty of education shall also be placed on the executive.

6.2 The following positions will be elected: President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, Director(s) of Public Relations, Immediate Past-President, and two Members at Large. One representative from each of the five sections shall be chosen as well. If interest is lacking, this may be done on a volunteer basis.

6.3 The term of the executive office shall be one year, coinciding with the fiscal year.

6.31 If the executive chooses to do so, they may allow for a new executive election at the end of the winter semester.

6.4 The executive officers named in 6.1 may appoint a replacement for any member of the executive who resigns before their term of office is completed.

6.5 The office of the Past-President is assumed. The Past-President shall take office for a minimum of one year following the completion of the term as president and may remain in office until a change in Presidency.

7. General Meeting: The general meeting shall be held at such a time as may be approved by the executive.

8. Finances: The executive shall have power to collect fees and to make expenditures. A financial statement shall be submitted to the general meetings.

9. Annual Reports: The society shall submit to the parent societies a yearly report of its programs, activities, and the finances for the proceeding year, by September 30.

9.1 May 30 if the executive is turned over.

10. Amendments: After notice of motion to amend the constitution has been given, the consitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of te members present at a general meeting.

11. If, at any time, the SSMSTS shall cease to carry out purpose as herein stated, all assests and property held by it, whether in trust or otherwise, after the payment of its liabilities, shall be paid over to the parent societies in equal distribution.

12. Duties of the Officers:

12.1 President

i) The President shall be at all Society and Executive meetings.

ii) The President shall be responsible for any correspondence between other organizations: provincial, national, international, and the Society. This responsibility may be delegated to other Executive members as the President sees fit.

iii) The President shall be responsible for the agenda at Society and Executive meetings.

iv) The President will be one of three signing officers of the the society.

12.2 Vice-President

i) The Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President in the absence of that officer.

ii) The Vice-President will be one of three signing officers of the society.

12.3 Secretary

i) The Secretary shall keep the minutes of each meeting and shall be responsible for all current records and documents of the Society.

ii) The Secretary shall ensure that a copy of the minutes are posted as timely as possible.

iii) The Secretary shall attend to all correspondence of the Executive Committee as directed and maintain a file of all correspondence.

iv) The Secretary shall maintain a file of the names and addresses of members of the executive.

v) The Secretary shall arrange meeting places.

12.4 Treasurer

i) The Treasurer shall receive all money due the Society and shall be responsible for the accounting of the Society's funds.

ii) The Treasurer shall present a financial report to the society at each general meeting.

iii) The Treasurer shall make an annual statement of the apportionment of its funds.

iv) The Treasurer shall make a financial report at each executive meeting.

v) The Treasurer shall arrange for a financial statement before the end of each fiscal year. (April 30).

vi) The Treasurer shall forward to the SMTS and the SSTS those memberships paid directly to the Society.

vii) The Treasurer shall prepare the financial statements and reportsfor the parent societies.

viii) The Treasurer shall be one of the three signing officers.

12.5 Director(s) of Public Relations

i) The Director(s) of Public Relations shall promote membership in the SSMSTS.

ii) The Director(s) of Public Relations shall advertise the activities of the society.

iii) The Director(s) of Public Relations shall be responsible for the Society's bulletin board.

12.6 Members at Large

i) The two Members at Large shall attend all Executive meetings and also have voting privilaeges while at these meetings.

12.7 Section Representatives

i) The Section Representatives shall attend all Executive meetings and also have voting privileges while at these meetings.

ii) The Section Representatives will also act as in-class public relation personnel for the Society and will be expected to promote membership in the SSMSTS.

13. Elections: The nominating committee shall consist of all members in good standing who are present at the nomination meetings.

14. Impeachment Policy: If at any time, concern is raised about the efforts of any member of the Executive, the following steps must be taken:

i) The member first must be approached by a fellow Executive member to discuss thier current standing.

ii) If problems persist, a vote may be taken among other Executive members. Impeachment may only take place if three quaters of the Executive is in full support.

iii) The impeached party would subsequently have their standing in the Society reverted back to regular membership.

iv) The vacated position may be immediately filled through normal nomination and election procedures.

15. Quorum: To pass motions at executive/general meetings, more than one half the members must be in attendance.

15.1. In extreme emergency situations, if possible, the President, Vice-President, plus two other executive members may pass a motion. If the President, Vice-President, or both are unavailable, any four executive members in good standing may pass a motion. Dealings in these situations must be reported on at the next executive/general meeting.
